The Greek minuscule: modern optimization

Greek minuscule is a handwriting style with a rich history. Thousands of ancient manuscripts preserved until today were written with the use of this style.

How would classical ancient writing look like today? What if we try and optimize a historical handwriting to fit current trends? These questions became the basis of this project.

This is an example of an Ancient Greek manuscript written in the style of early X century minuscule.
On the basis of Greek minuscule, Latin alphabet was created. It is important to note that the historical handwriting style wasn't calligraphic and was not supposed to be highly detailed. I also had to preserve the subtle natural inaccuracy while working on this new style.
Ligatures were of great importance in ancient minuscule. However, sometimes they made the text almost unreadable even for experts in linguistics. I decided to use ligatures as decorative elements for the new handwriting style.
It was decided to use a scroll as a type of container. Textured paper and light-reflecting ink were chosen to convey the feeling of sacred, as such scrolls often contained religious scriptures.
These scratches represent the antiquity of the manuscript.
Special thanks to the Svitki MSK studio which helped me a lot with preparing the scroll.
